When it comes to great 'cue in LA, there are places that people immediately rattle off of their meaty lips: Phillips, Bludso's, Baby Blues (all of which are included in our Top 5 list). But just like any sushi bar worth its hamachi, some of the best barbecue is found off the grid, maybe served from a truck, a farmers' market stand, or in a deep Valley strip mall. Here's a slideshow of some worth seeking out, let us know if we missed your favorite in the comments.

  1. What a great list -- can't wait to check out the other four hidden gems! I do eat somewhat regularly at Smoke City, which is just a couple blocks from my office. I judge a BBQ joint by its brisket, and hot damn Smoke City's brisket rocks. Just the right amount of fat, incredible flavor, and juicy as could be. The beef ribs are a close second for me.

The short write-up above is spot on. Nothing fancy to distract from the grub. Butcher paper instead of plates. Sauce of the side. Just the way BBQ should be!

  2. It's great to see Smoke City on this list! Smoke City is one of my family's favorite places to eat BBQ. Looking forward to trying out the other hidden gems, too.

  3. You CANNOT speak Bar BQ without mentioning RIB RANCH Bar B Que on Topanga Cyn Blvd in Woodland Hills. It has been operating since 1970 and is fantastic.
