SoWe. Named for its home in Southwest Center City, the modern bistro takes over the shuttered Divan Turkish Kitchen space at 22nd and Carpenter and will feature a menu from Maureen Stoebenau.
Stoebenau was most recently chef at East Passyunk’s Royal Tavern, where her creative and well-executed takes on bar food (especially the burger) brought acclaim to the lowbrow pub, and she’s brought much of that sensibility to the new venture. As much a destination as a neighborhood go-to, the 50-seat room will serve snacks and starters, sandwiches, salads and mains, none costing more than $21.
The burger is found here too, a half-pounder with fried peppers and onions, cheddar, applewood bacon and horseradish mayo ($11), but so are varied creative alternative, such a sandwich of seared seitan and mushrooms ($10), an appetizer of roasted eggplant and yogurt ($7) and an entree of ricotta gnudi ($17). Specialty cocktails - easily enjoyed along the spacious weathered oak bar - are all $9 and under. Half a dozen taps pour crafts that complement a respectable bottle and can list. SoWe will serve lunch, dinner and late-night fare seven days a week.
