SoWe Opens in Graduate Hospital This Wednesday

The Graduate Hospital neighborhood is getting a new option for elevated comfort food this week, as proprietors Nancy Law and Troy Barton launch SoWe. Named for its home in Southwest Center City, the modern bistro takes over the shuttered Divan Turkish Kitchen space at 22nd and Carpenter and will feature a menu from Maureen Stoebenau.
Stoebenau was most recently chef at East Passyunk’s Royal Tavern, where her creative and well-executed takes on bar food (especially the burger) brought acclaim to the lowbrow pub, and she’s brought much of that sensibility to the new venture. As much a destination as a neighborhood go-to, the 50-seat room will serve snacks and starters, sandwiches, salads and mains, none costing more than $21.

The burger is found here too, a half-pounder with fried peppers and onions, cheddar, applewood bacon and horseradish mayo ($11), but so are varied creative alternative, such a sandwich of seared seitan and mushrooms ($10), an appetizer of roasted eggplant and yogurt ($7) and an entree of ricotta gnudi ($17). Specialty cocktails - easily enjoyed along the spacious weathered oak bar - are all $9 and under. Half a dozen taps pour crafts that complement a respectable bottle and can list. SoWe will serve lunch, dinner and late-night fare seven days a week.
