Wine on tap and growlers for beer are both popping up everywhere around town, and the
Brooklyn Winery is combining the two trends with a new offering: wine growlers. Come on people, wasn't it only a matter of time? As you probably have heard, the establishment makes their own wines on site, and labels like Pinot Noir, Riesling and Rose are available from the bar's draft lines. Well, starting on June 7 you'll be able to take the housemade vino home in custom-designed, 750ml growlers. You can use the growler again and again, refilling it with you favorite vintage on draft.
Here's the thing though - why not just buy a bottle? Also, we imagine you'd have to knock back this bottle pretty quickly to avoid oxidation. So, what do you think, are wine growlers brilliant or will a bottle suffice?
These are both excellent questions! On June 7th, we will be releasing 8 new wines, but only 4 of them will be available for purchase in bottle. The other four varietals are only available on tap in the wine bar and - until now - had only been available to drink on site. Now, you can grab a growler and take these wines home with you, too!
ReplyDeleteWhen a growler is filled from the keg, the wine is in an anaerobic environment - as it would be when it is traditionally bottled. The growlers are then sealed with a stopper cork and are intended to be consumed soon after purchase. We have been conducting tests and have found that a sealed growler, when opened after three weeks, tastes just as fresh as the day it was poured. (We are continuing to test this and are very happy with the results!) Once opened, the oxidation rate is the same as any open bottle of wine and it's contents should be consumed within two days.
Our growler is definitely meant to be taken home for the evening's dinner or to a party and is not meant for your cellar. Come on by the winery on June 7th and give it a try!
