Our 14 Favorite Off-The-Radar Burgers

The burger at Tavern on Jane
There are thousands of burgers in the Big Apple, but the same few always get all the attention. Yeah, we know about the lines at Shake Shack, and that blue cheese on the burger at The Spotted Pig is super tasty, but what about the rest of them? This week, we decided to skip the popular patties and dig our teeth into the burgers that don't get the fanfare they deserve. Our editors came of with the below list of off-the-radar-burgers that rank with the best of them, even if they aren't in the spotlight. Are there burger joints that you think merit more buzz? Now's your chance to shine the light on this town's unsung burger heroes - vote for your favorites in our NYC Restaurants survey here.

    1. My husband and I LOVE the burgers at Back Forty Restaurant on Avenue B and 12th Street in the East Village. They are grass fed, juicy and very tasty.

  4. When even our former President has become a vegan, and Mario Batali is promoting eating less meat, one would think or hope that Zagat's coverage would be more imaginative, and include at least ONE - if not several - vegan burgers.

  5. Let's disregard that PC "less meat" comment we're talking hamburgers here. I had a great burger the other day at Stout near The Garden. I added the fried egg and it was very good.

    1. Unfortunately, you're actually disregarding, oh. . . let's see: the environmental impact of the meat industry, grave animal welfare issues, global starvation rates (exacerbated by the poor vegetable protein to animal protein conversion rates implicit in meat and egg production). Despite your comments, food choices don't exist in a vacuum devoid of consequences. And by the way, the article is about BURGERS, not hamburgers.

  6. What? No J.G. Melon? Been around too long and not "hip" enough? One of the best burgers in the city is why the place is usually packed with a waiting line...

  7. I vote for Oxcart Tavern for best burger, hands down!
The twice fried hand cut fries are amazing also!
By the way Zagat, why is Oxcart not on the list of restaurants to vote for best burger, seems kind of silly to push a vote that is featured in this article, yet I can't vote for a restaurant in the article.
