The Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Pig in a Blanket Bread at Girl and the Goat

This week, we're in the Windy City to celebrate the launch of Chicago's young talent with our first-ever Chi-Town 30 Under 30 list. Of course, we had to go to a bazillion restaurants, and Stephanie Izard's Girl & The Goat was certainly on the agenda. The former Top Chef contestant has developed a stellar reputation for her meat-heavy offerings at this bustling joint, but one of the best dishes we had was a silent threat that wasn't even on the main menu.

The pig in a blanket was located on the "bread" section, which was handed to us as a supplemental list. Yeah, we know Izard isn't going to trot out some average cocktail wieners, but this one went beyond our expectations. It's a simple, sliced loaf that has some pork baked into the middle. Served with mustard and  green pea puree for dipping/slathering, we kept coming back to this as our favorite even as the more elaborate dishes made their way from the kitchen. There was more than enough to share between our party of four but, perhaps inspired by the pig moniker, we could have easily ate the entire thing by ourselves. Forget deep dish, we think it's about time for a new bready option to be the go-to guilty pleasure in this town.
