Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Kale Salad at Battersby

Salad doesn't typically jump out to us on a menu, but after hearing from a trusted source that the crispy kale version at Carroll Garden's Battersby was a must-try, we decided to take the plunge. Reminiscent of the dish we love at SriPraPhai, the kale leaves offer a satisfying crunch without being greasy, while the sourness, acidity and slight hint of chili in the dressing keep it refreshing and light. The addition of fresh julienned kohlrabi rounds it out, providing a clean, crisp, juicy texture. After finishing and feeling tempted to order another, we were relieved to realize that we don't have to make the trip to Queens next time a crispy salad craving hits.

And since a woman cannot survive on salad alone (at least not this one), we have to mention the spaghetti with sea urchin, chili and lemon. No, this is not your grandmother's spaghetti - it's better. The noodles were al dente, the uni fresh, the sauce rich and flavorful, but not overpowering. For anyone who believes delicate seafood and noodles don't mix - here's your proof of the contrary. Battersby is located at 255 Smith Street, Brooklyn; 718-852-8321.
