10 Super Tacky Restaurants From Around the U.S.

Milon, NYC
Giant waterfalls cascading from faux rocks, talking fish, leopard-print banquettes - these are all attributes of some delightfully "tacky" restaurants whose kitschy decor is often more exciting than the food. These places are awesome not because they have an haute chef or shmancy cuisine, but because just being there is the experience unto itself. (Of course, good food is a bonus.) What's your favorite eatery with lovably tacky decor? Let us know in the comments.

  2. How could you leave out Trailer Park in Chelsea? That place is rough on the eyes, even if they serve tater tos.

  3. I think you're wrong about Pinnacle Peak. The first one was in Arizona; I was there in the early 60's. It was named for the actual Pinnacle Peak mountain.

    1. I agree with you. I was in that one too in the early 60's. I went back again in the early 90's and it was still there and hasn't changed much at all. It was just outside Phoenix off Scottsdale Road in Rawhide. It was a lot of fun and the food was really good.

    2. In 1967 when I first visited Pinnacle Peak Patio in Tucson, it had been open had been open long enough that the entire ceiling was fringed with cut-off ties. It was just like the one north of Phoenix, with the same ties, the same steak/beans/bread/iceberg lettuce salad, and the same atmosphere.

  4. Check out the Bubble Room on Sanibel Island, Florida. Bubble Scouts wait on you and you could spend hours just looking at all the stuff on the walls, buried in the table tops, on the ceilings - incredible. Don't forget dessert there, unbelievable.

    1. Beat me to it, and you can add the toilet walkway into Le Tub in Ft. Lauderdale and, of course the famous Bern's Steak House in Tampa, which serves superb food in what can only be called an 1890's bordello.

  5. For kitsch and excellent food, go to Cha Cha Cha Salsaria in Hawaii Kai, Hawaii. Its fun decor, and lots of different hot sauces to try, along with a fun staff. My favorite is the Mahi quesadilla! It's just amazing!

  6. How could they not mention that everything at Bugaboo Creek is animatronic? The moose sings, racoons or something pop out of barrels and spin around, and several other animals which I can't remember.

  7. Have to agree with the previous post. The Bubble Room should have been somewhere on this list (it's actually on Captiva Island not Sanibel). Desserts particulalry the red velvet cake are what they're known for but the sandwiches and fried potatoes are nothing short of astounding.

  9. You've obviously not been to linger in Denver. Just ridiculous for you to include it in a list of "super tacky" restaurants. Idiots.

  10. How could they leave out Clifton's Cafeteria in Los Angeles?!?!?

  11. I'm still trying to figure out whether this is a good thing or a list of shame?

  12. Yeah, while Casa Bonita's a given, if you're going to include two "tacky" restaurants from Denver, agreed that Linger is quirky but not at all tacky. There's a difference. The other should have been the Buckhorn Exchange.
