What's Up With: Restaurants Being Stingy With the Bread?

What's Up With...is a column in which we point out controversial dining trends or restaurant policies that we've noticed at bars or restaurants.

At a recent meal in NYC we ordered a dish that was described as a "crab and avocado dip" - so naturally we were expecting it to come with an ample supply of carb-laden accoutrement (chips, crostini what have you). When the dish arrived, beautifully plated (a hefty portion mind you), a dainty wooden box filled with housemade chips was also served to us - problem was - at first glance we could actually count the number of chips inside the box (seven, in case you were wondering). Clearly this was not going to be even close to enough for the amount of dip served unless we piled a gigantic mound on each chip. Duh.

As all of this was sinking in, the waiter immediately noted: "By the way, if you want more chips, it's $2 extra." What the what? So another serving of seven measly chips costs $2? Not sure about you but lately we've been noticing this trend with lots of trendy restaurants - why is everyone being so stingy with the carbs? Last time we checked bread/chips cost about $.0001 cents each to make and while a smaller portion makes for a prettier presentation - the carb-to-dip ratio is just getting way out of wack. Two small crostini is not enough to polish off a giant bowl full of chicken liver mousse! Just sayin'.
