Most of us are used to shelling out as much as $2 for their morning cup o' joe, but at some places, that price will only get you a lump of sugar. While most cafes stick to your basic drip coffee, high-end shops around the country have perfected the art of brewing though various single-cup methods including the pricy
Clover coffeemaker and the laboratory-style siphon system, also called vacuum or vac pot, which involves various glass bowls, water vapors and suction. Sound complicated? Why would anyone pay $22 for a cup of coffee?
ReplyDeleteIt's a simple answer. If you are a coffee snob with the cash, it's no biggie. I've paid $18 for a cup and enjoyed it immensely. My favorite place is Intelligentsia and of course France; where I've paid $28 USD. It's a treat not a daily habit.

ReplyDeleteI think it was roughly a $22/per cup at the Four Seasons in Paris (at that time, this would have been around the amount comparing euro to dollar).

ReplyDeleteI'd say given paying these prices for coffee versus what you'd receive at a bar in quantity and quality, it doesn't seem that indulgent.
ReplyDeletelooks like the old vacuum coffee makers from the 50s. . .except they were aluminum or stainless steel, were heated over a hot plate and were in every dive and diner around. .. I'm hearing pt barnum snickering in my head. . .

I'm surprised Intelligentsia in Venice isn't on here...I was there with friends recently and waited inline...until we saw the menu and the prices! omg like $8-10 for a Latte?????wow.
ReplyDeletemy most expensive cup of coffee ever was from a machine at Arco. It was so hot that when I spilled a bit of it on myself I rear ended the car in front of me. 600 dollars.
