Tortaria, a Mexican Sandwich Shop and Tequila Bar, Opens Today Near Union Square

That bodega-looking place on the corner of 12th Street and University isn't your typical corner store. Although it is done up like a fancified neighborhood concession, the venue is actually the 65-seat restaurant Tortaria that specializes in tortas, or Mexican sandwiches. There will also be offerings like house-made guac, a selection of taquitos and sides like frizzled onion strings. The concept is from restaurteur Howard Berke, who knows a thing or two about Mexican grub. He owns the Caliente Cab Co., an outpost of which is nearby in the West Village.

Here, the bodega-inspired decor puts offers a re imagined, and less mainstream take on "Mexican food culture in New York City." While we're a fan of the tacos being prepped in the back of genuine bodegas, it's nice to see that this outpost will offer something that you're unlikely to find in those neighborhood joints: booze. There will be margaritas in a variety of flavors, including grapefruit, pineapple and orange along with plenty of tequilas to sip or mix into other drinks. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner, you can get more information about it here (94 University Pl.; 212-776-1830).
