Sneak Peek at Unum, Opening Soon in Georgetown

We got an early look at Unum, a globally influenced, moderately priced New American slated to open in the next two weeks in the intimate Georgetown space that once housed Mendocino Grille. Chef-co-owner Phillip Blane, whose cooking credits include a stint at Equinox, promises interesting but approachable twists such as crayfish grits with hanger steak (surf 'n' turf), a bar menu offering snacks like cod and chorizo tater tots, plus cheese and charcuterie. The stylish, seductively lit stone-and-wood setting features an eye-catching, steel wall sculpture and an inviting bar that may well draw lobbyists once word gets out that co-owner Laura Schiller, the chef’s wife, has a day job on Capitol Hill - she’s Senator Boxer’s chief of staff (2917 M St. NW; 202-621-6959; www.unumdc.com).
