| Lillie's in the Theater District |
The Theater District just got a little hit of Victorian style, and we're not talking about a new production of
The Importance of Being Earnest. We noticed that Lillie's has quietly opened on West 49th Street, right across from the theater that houses the perpetually-mobbed
Book of Mormon. The eatery refers to itself as a "Victorian establishment," and is the second outpost from the similarly themed
Lillie's near Union Square. The decor goes all out with the time period - the whole place looks like it was decorated with items from one of those weird Midtown antique dealers that always have life-sized bronze statues of giraffes for sale on the sidewalk. The establishment takes its name from Lillie Langtry, who was a famous actress in the 1880's known as "The Jersey Lily." How appropriate, given it's location (249 West 49th St.; 212-957-4530).
Another just-opened eatery in the area has taken over the West Side Sushi space on Ninth Avenue. This strip has about a bajillion Thai joints, and now it has a bajillion and one with the opening of VIV. The space sets itself apart with a futuristic design featuring neon lights and a stylish bar area that looks out onto the street through a picture window, but you'll still find all of the standards on the menu. Think spring rolls, pad-see eiw, et al, with reasonable prices across the boards (check out that $7.95 . If you're into vibe dining, Thai style, visit the restaurant at 717 Ninth Ave and check out its website
here (212-581-5999).
